Mayor Malik Announces Police Chief Search Town Halls and Releases Survey Results

Akron, Ohio, April 5, 2024 — Today, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is announcing the next steps in the search process for Akron’s Police Chief.

The community will have two opportunities to share thoughts and ask questions of the candidates: Deputy Chief Jesse Leeser and Acting Chief/Deputy Chief Brian Harding. In addition, the candidates will have meetings with the officers and staff of the Akron Police Department and community leaders, including Akron City Council and the Black Elected Officials of Summit County.

Mayor Malik is also releasing the Police Chief Survey Results Report which delves into the responses received in both the community survey and the internal survey of Akron Police Department employees. View the report here and the appendix here.

Mayor Malik commented: “Throughout this process I have shared what I know and my best judgment, at every step along the way. As we move forward, it is important that we provide opportunity for the residents to hear directly from candidates and engage fully with the process. I look forward to these engagement opportunities and to hearing our residents’ feedback.”
