HR Responsibilities
The City of Akron's Department of Human Resources is responsible for a comprehensive human resource program, which advances the recruitment, development, and retention of qualified individuals in a diverse and inclusive workforce.?
The Department of Human Resources administers a fair and equitable employment system which provides for a broad classification and compensation program for all City employees and administers a merit system for classified employees of the City of Akron and Akron Public Schools.

The Employment Office is responsible for the recruitment, selection and retention of all classified employees in the City. This includes promoting employment opportunities, evaluating applications, administering examinations, onboarding new employees and providing services to increase engagement and retention of current employees. We interact daily with the public regarding our services and employment opportunities.

The City of Akron offers a comprehensive employee benefits package to its eligible employees, and their dependents. The Employee Benefits Division administers the group health insurance plans, including Medical, Prescription, Dental, Vision, and Life. In addition, The City of Akron offers a voluntary direct primary health care program for eligible employees and their dependents.
Employee Benefits oversees Deferred Compensation, Voluntary Benefits, Employee Assistance Programs, Pet Insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts and Student Loan Support. They also assist employees interested in pursuing retirement.

The primary function of the Employee Records Office is the maintenance and updating of employee records. Other functions include:
- Monitoring weekly payroll activity records for compliance with all rules, regulations, and ordinances.
- Responding to various information requests including subpoenas, employment verifications, and unemployment compensation.

- Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) - Processes employees' requests for leave to determine eligibility and designation of FMLA absences.
- Transitional Work/Light Duty- Assists employees and departments/divisions in coordinating the return of an employee to temporary, modified work as the employee transitions back to regular duty employment.
- Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAAA) - Coordinates the processing of requests for reasonable accommodation.
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - Confidential and voluntary program that provides short-term counseling (6 free sessions) to employees and family members. The current vendor is ease@work.
- Processes and files work-related injuries and illnesses with the Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC).
- Maintains injury and illness records and reports statistical information to federal, state, and local agencies.
- Participates in the promotion of City-wide safety and compliance with the State of Ohio Public Employment Risk Reduction Program (PERRP).
- The current Managed Care Organization (MCO) is Minute Men OhioComp.
