City of Akron Arrests Suspect in Gas & Save Shooting

Akron, Ohio, Feb. 6, 2024  — Today, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Acting Police Chief Brian Harding are announcing an arrest has been made in a recent shooting which took place near the Gas & Save on January 25. The suspect entered the Gas & Save located in the 800 block of W. Exchange Street and stole a tip jar from the counter.  The victim, 25, who is an employee of the store, followed the subject down Delia Avenue a few blocks, where the suspect shot him.  The suspect fled on foot following the senseless shooting. This morning, the suspect was arrested in the 800 block of Oberlin St. by members of the Akron Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.  

The suspect is a 17-year-old male and has been charged with aggravated robbery, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence.  Aggravated robbery is a felony of the first degree. Felonious assault is a felony in the second degree and tampering with evidence is a felony in the third degree. The victim remains hospitalized and will face life-long complications due to this shooting.  

“I want to thank the Akron Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Task Force for their swift work in investigating this case and arresting the suspect,” said Akron Mayor Malik. “I want to make it very clear that anyone perpetrating violence will be held accountable in Akron. I am thankful that the victim has survived this senseless act, and we will ensure his attacker is brought to justice.”  

“This arrest is a credit to the dedication and commitment of our Akron officers and detectives as well as the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force,” said Chief Harding. “We have had folks working around the clock to find this suspect to ensure he will face the consequences of these senseless actions. I also want to thank our community as it was a tip that helped lead us to the suspect. The more that our residents get involved and break that code of silence, the safer our community can be.” 

The suspect is being held at the Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility. The case remains under investigation.
