Application for Zoning Certification 

Official Zoning Certification letters can be obtained from the Zoning Division through the submission of an Application for Zoning Certification form.  Applicants may use the certification for several purposes such as to secure financing, obtain a license from another agency, or determine if a property is legally suitable for their desired use.  Requests include a $50 fee made payable to the City of Akron.


Akron Planning Commission

The Akron City Planning Commission reviews and/or approves matters regarding conditional use requests, rezonings, allotments, street vacations, dedications, sale of city-owned property, and more.  Meetings are held on Fridays as scheduled on the linked calendar beginning at 9:00 am in the Akron City Council Chambers on the 3rd floor of the municipal building at 166 S. High Street in downtown Akron. 

The City Council makes the final decision on zoning matters such as conditional use requests or rezonings.

Akron Board of Zoning Appeals

Akron Board of Zoning Appeals considers variances or exceptions to the strict interpretation of the Akron Zoning Code.  Examples include varying the height of a garage, encroaching on building line setbacks, and property line variances.  Meetings are held on Wednesdays as scheduled the linked calendar beginning at 9:00 am in Akron City Council Chambers on the 3rd floor of the municipal building at 166 S. High Street in downtown Akron.

Urban Design and Historic Preservation Commission

The Urban Design and Historic Preservation Commission provides independent aesthetic review of various development projects in the city, and review application for historic designation of local buildings and districts.  Those wishing to nominate a building or district for historic designation should complete the appropriate historic designation application.

City of Akron Tax Abatement

The City of Akron's residential property tax abatement program exempts 100% of the added property value on any new home construction or home renovation (valued at approximately $5,000 or more), for a period of 15 years.
