The office also includes Loan and Grant Specialists and Rehabilitation Specialists.

The Housing and Community Services Division performs a variety of functions related to preserving and improving the quality of life for Akron residents. Areas of responsibility include:

  • Assistance in rehabilitation and remediation of lead hazards within Neighborhood Redevelopment and Initiative Areas, Neighborhood Business Districts.
  • Assistance in home rehabilitation for low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners
  • Provision of funding and administrative support to Community Development Corporations and Housing Development Organizations
  • Technical Assistance with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funded programs
Minor Home Repair

The City works with Rebuilding Together Greater Cuyahoga Valley, a nonprofit organization, to provide small grants to very low-income households for repair of one or two items in their homes. Most programs are targeted to the elderly or disabled. There is some limited assistance to very low-income owner-occupants. Call 330-375-2050 for more information.

Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant Program 2012 - 2019

Over the past three years the City of Akron Department of Housing and Urban Development has received $3 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide lead hazard control repairs in housing. The list below indicates housing units made lead safe through this program for both owner occupied and rental housing units.

Lead Safe Akron Grant Program

Funding for the Lead Safe Akron Grant Program 2020 - 2023 is now available.  Eligible households include those with a child under the age of 6 living in the home (or frequently visiting), which are at 80% of the median household income (earn no more than $52,100.00 for a family of 3) and live in a home built before 1978 which contains lead based paint.  Types of assistance may include new siding, doors, windows, porch repairs, and other improvements which address lead based paint.  Both owner occupied households, and rental structures of 1-4 units are eligible.  Please call 330-375-2050 for more information or to request an application for assistance.
