Dance Program

The Northwest Dance Program runs from September - May, ending with a dance recital sometime at the end of May or beginning of June. We offer nine different dance styles/genres throughout the week and on Saturday mornings at various times and levels. Please check Akron.RecDesk for more information and to register.
Dance Program
Ballet is a traditional style of dance which stresses an academic technique derived from French terms. It is a strict and demanding form of dance characterized by graceful, flowing movements and precise movements. This dance style requires stretching in order to warm up the muscles and help prevent injuries. Ballet technique and positions form the basis of most forms of dance.
Hip Hop is an energetic form of street dance with a variety of styles usually danced to hip hop music. It is a fast pace rhythmic dance form, which involves popping, locking, breaking and some Jazz based movements.
Jazz is a form of dance that is matched to the rhythm and energy of upbeat music. Using technique from ballet, jazz is energetic, incorporates intricate footwork and strong movements.
Lyrical is a slow, expressive type of jazz that incorporates ballet technique. Movements are characterized by fluidity and grace, allowing the dancers to express a range of strong emotions through their dancing.
Pom combines cheer motion technique and dance technique. It is a synchronized form of dance with sharp motions and fun upbeat music. It focuses on flexibility, kicks, jumps, and turns.
Scottish Highland Dance is an aerobic form of dance that requires the control and grace of ballet. Highland Dance focuses on the traditional dances of Scotland, namely the Fling, Sword Dance, Seann Truibhas and Reels which are used to tell a story making them ballads in dance form.
Scottish National Dance focuses on the more modern ballet-based dances of Scotland -such as Lilt, Flora, Village Maid, Scotch Measure, Blue Bonnets, Earl of Erroll, Sailor’s Hornpipe and more.
Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of the metal tap striking the floor as a form of percussion. It is very rhythmic. This class introduces basic tap steps and works on putting them together.
Theater dance combines jazz technique with other genres to create a "Broadway" style of dance. The movement can range anywhere from sharp to flowing and incorporates using emotions and intense facial expressions.
