Akron is a truly giving community. We have a wealth of citizens who give much of their time and talents to this City every single day. To honor those who truly have gone above and beyond for Akron and its citizens, Mayor Horrigan has introduced the Mayor’s Distinguished Service Award.
The Mayor’s Distinguished Service Award is an award bestowed by the Mayor of Akron in recognition of those who have made an especially meritorious contribution to the safety or local interests of the City. Recipients may be chosen for exceptional displays of valor, life-saving acts, lifetime achievements or service, or other exemplary accomplishments.
The award can be given to an Akron citizen or any City of Akron employee, including City of Akron safety forces.
The award(s) are to be given out annually or semiannually at a time of the Mayor’s choosing. Recipients are selected by the Mayor, either on his own initiative or based on recommendations.
The award may be given with the honor of Distinction, at the Mayor’s discretion.
The award(s) will be given to the recipient(s) by the Mayor personally, and may be done in a public ceremony.
The Mayor’s office will take recommendations, with awardees being announced 1-2 times a year. All final decisions are at the sole discretion of the Mayor. Nominations must be submitted in writing.
