Akron Cares Eligibility

Emergency funding is available to eligible City of Akron residents who are having difficulty paying their Akron Utility Bill and are delinquent.  This program is made possible through generous donations from customers, city employees and community partners. 

In order to receive assistance, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Have a letter of participation (must be dated and include name) from one of the following:
    • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as Food Stamps or EBT) or WIC
    • Ohio Medicaid
    • Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) or Percentage of Income Payment Plus (PIPP)
    • Ohio Works First (OWF)
    • Ohio Public Housing Benefits

OR

  1. Homeowner of the property and a current recipient of the Homestead Exemption as verified by Summit County Property Records. 

OR

  1. If they do not have a letter of participation from one of the above they can verify (by (2) most recent pay stubs or SSI stubs) that household income is less than 300% of the federal poverty level (see Chart below)

For family households with more than 8 persons, add $13,620 for each additional person.

  1. Finances have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the individual is struggling to make utility bill payments due to this hardship.  Must provide documentation of hardship experienced due to COVID-19 (i.e.  PUA Unemployment application, furlough letter, evidence of reduced hours, etc.)

General Information

  • Akron Cares will offer a one-time credit of up to $500.00 towards an eligible delinquent City of Akron utility bill.
  • Funding is limited and is provided on a first come/first served basis the relief program will run until funds are exhausted.
  • Customers will receive a credit on their account, which will be noted in the City’s utility billing system, and will not be eligible again for 365 days.
