Welcome to the Akron Municipal Employees Credit Union, AMECU.  It is our main concern as a financial institution to provide convenient financial services to the members in a financially secure, friendly, and competitive manner. We invite you to become a member of our family and enjoy the benefits of belonging to your credit union.

The NCUA (National Credit Union Administration) manages the federal share insurance fund for credit unions. When you see our NCUA logo and the words "federally insured" on our doors and transaction windows, you can relax in the knowledge that your insured deposits here are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government. Federal Deposit Insurance covers your deposits up to $250,000 for each of several account categories: Individual, Joint, Revocable Trust and IRA accounts.  We'd be glad to review your accounts and federal insurance coverage -- just stop in and visit with a member of our staff.

Akron Municipal Employees Credit Union is a co-op whose basic objectives are to teach and encourage thrift among members and through their combined savings extend to members - low cost loans - for any worthwhile purpose. As a member you own the credit union. Once you join you become a member of a national financial system. The credit union does not stand alone; it is joined by some 11,162 credit unions throughout the United States.

Why join a credit union? Because it's an association of people united by a common bond and incorporated under Federal law for the purpose of doing financial business with each other.

Akron Municipal Employees Credit Union membership is open to anyone who is employed by the City of Akron and their family members. This membership is open to spouses, parents, children, siblings.

We also offer joint accounts. Members owning a joint account agree to share all account funds and have full access rights to monies on deposit. Accounts may be held with or without rights of survivorship.

Organizations that are within our field of membership may also open credit union accounts, contact us if you need more information regarding these type of accounts.

To join the credit union, visit our offices and pick up a membership application, or call us and we will be happy to send you one via inter-office mail or the USPS.

Share accounts are the credit union's primary savings accounts. Deposits can be made in person, by mail, payroll deduction or direct deposit. Withdrawals are permitted any time.  What kind of accounts are there? There are both single and joint accounts. A single account is operated by one member only. A joint account is an account held by one member and any other person. A joint account requires signatures of both members on the membership card. Either member may deposit and/or withdraw savings from the account. We also offer custodial and trust accounts.  Dividends are calculated on the average daily balance paid monthly.

Share certificates are timed deposits based on the length of maturity and amount of deposit. They are federally insured to $250,000 by NCUA, a U.S. Government Agency.

Club accounts are convenient, single purpose accounts for such things as Christmas or vacation. You can have your Christmas Club account or Vacation Club setup to where funds cannot be withdrawn until a certain period. Christmas Club funds are transferred October 15 to a member's regular share account.

Are you looking for ways to invest your money today so that you can live tomorrow? Then you would probably be interested in an IRA. IRAs are Individual Retirement Accounts. They are set up similar to a CD but only offered in terms of 12, 24, and 36 months. IRA rates are the same as CD rates.

A Checking account without hidden costs. If you haven't already, you should take advantage of this key service offered here at the Credit Union.

Our checking account gives you:

  • No monthly fee
  • No transaction charge
  • Easy access to your money
  • A monthly statement showing all transactions with your account
  • Overdraft protection
  • Transfer from savings
  • ATM (Star/MAC) accessibility

The Credit Union can provide you with this added benefit because we are a non-profit organization formed and dedicated to providing you with every financial benefit possible. We've got a good deal for you! Why check anywhere else!

Don't stand in line on payday. Your check can be deposited directly to your account - savings, loan payments, checking, or club accounts. With Direct Deposit, you can be sure that when payday rolls around, your money is in your account -- not lost, stolen or sitting in your wallet waiting for you to deposit or cash it. Even better, your pay is available as cash immediately -- unlike a paycheck which has to clear before you can access your funds. It's easy to sign up! Simply ask your payroll department or Credit Union how you can enroll.

Star/MAC -- It's as good as cash. Actually it's better. These days, it just doesn't make sense to carry around a lot of cash or waste time writing a check. Especially since you can pay with your Star/MAC card just about anywhere, wherever you see a "Star/MAC Accepted Here" sign. They're all over the place. So put convenience in your wallet instead of all that cash. Stop by the Credit Union today and sign up for your new Star/MAC card. The first card is free and it only takes a minute.

The Credit Union offers its members a variety of Savings options with competitive rates and terms for share deposits, share certificates (CDs), and IRAs. This also applies to our loan portfolio for new and used autos, RVs, home equity, personal line of credit, share or CD secured loans. The rates are reviewed and set monthly by the Board of Directors. See the rate table for our current savings or loan rates and terms.

Akron Municipal Employees Credit Union members have available loans for almost every worthwhile purpose including cars, boats, trailers, motor homes, furniture, appliances and home improvements. Simply fill out an application and turn it in.  A $15 application fee is required with submittal of application.  Most loan decisions are made in one working day.  Most future requests can be handled by a phone call.  You can apply for a loan as soon as you join.

Payroll deductions create a painless way to make your loan payments. They eliminate the hassles of writing a check, mailing payments or making payments in person.

Why borrow at your Credit Union?  Your Credit Union usually has the lowest cost loans available to most people. There are no hidden charges when you borrow at the Credit Union.  Interest is compounded only for the time you have the money.  When you make a large payment, you automatically reduce the interest at that time.  You aren't forced to wait for a rebate of the unearned interest when the loan is paid in full.
