On March 15, 2013, Mayor Don Plusquellic appointed Attorney Randy Briggs to Deputy Mayor for Labor Relations for the City of Akron.  He succeeds interim Deputy Mayor Patricia Ambrose Rubright, an Akron Assistant Director of Law and Interim Personnel Director.

Briggs graduated summa cum laude from the State University of New York in 1980, and obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron, School of Law, in 1983.

He then was engaged in private practice with the law firm of Sternberg, Newman & Associates, later becoming partner in the firm of Cook, Davis & Briggs.

After leaving Cook, Davis & Briggs he started the firm of Briggs & Pry with fellow attorney Russ Pry. During those years he also worked as a Magistrate in the Akron Municipal Court, hearing small claims cases and evictions, as well as traffic and housing code violation cases.

Briggs has had extensive work in employment and labor law representing both employers and employees. He represented NFL football players as a union representative with National Football League Players Association in contract negotiations, along with professional soccer players in the MLS and golfers on the LPGA.

He has practiced law in the private sector for several years, in both Ohio and Florida, appearing in numerous State and Federal Courts. Most recently, Briggs served as General Counsel for the Summit County Sheriff, where he provided counsel to the Sheriff on all legal issues, oversaw personnel matters, negotiated Union contracts, addressed grievances, handled arbitrations, resolved employee discipline issues, and developed practices and procedures.

Briggs is also very involved in the community, currently directing and overseeing the Summit DD Board in Tallmadge, Ohio as Board President.

As Deputy Mayor for Labor Relations, Briggs’ responsibilities include negotiating collective bargaining agreements with city employees, overseeing employment contracts on behalf of the city, and handling day to day labor issues between the unions and the city.
