HOW TO CHECK FOR LEAKS
Toilets
• Remove the tank cover and pour in food coloring, brewed coffee, or other substance to color the water.
• Do not flush the toilet.
• Wait 10 to 15 minutes.
• If the water in the bowl remains clear, no leaks.
• If the water in the bowl becomes discolored, there is a leak.
After the test, flush the toilet to remove the discolored water. Check toilets for leaks often. A warped or cracked flapper is the most common causes of a leaking toilet. Inexpensive toilet leak repair kits are available at home improvement stores.
Faucets
• Check faucets in the bathroom and kitchen periodically.
• Worn washers are most often the cause of dripping faucets.
Use your water meter to detect leaks.
• Make sure no water is being used inside or outside (no washing machine filling, no shower running, no watering outdoors, etc.).
• Locate your water meter and carefully lift the top of the meter.
• Find the blue leak detector on the meter dial. If all of your water sources are off and the leak detector is rotating, you have a leak.
