Akron: The Polymer Center

The presence of three major universities and an international industrial consortium make the Akron area one of the leading liquid crystal and polymer research and development centers in the world. In addition, Akron boasts the largest concentration of plastics and rubber manufacturing plants, machines, and materials in North America. Polymer companies in Greater Akron employ almost five times as many plastics workers as the average U.S. region.

Greater Akron and the surrounding region have a long and rich tradition associated with polymers and plastics.  Northeast Ohio has the largest concentration of plastic and rubber plants in North America and the Greater Akron Region is home to the largest number of polymer companies in Ohio, employing more than 31,000 people in the area.  Manufacturing represents 16 percent of Akron’s workforce and Akron has become the center for engineered plastics and rotational molding.  Akron’s reputation as the nation’s leader in polymer and plastic processing is enhanced by The University of Akron’s College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, the only college in the world devoted to the study of polymers.
