Akron, Ohio, March 16, 2018 Akron is preparing to break ground on its first new fire station in 22 years. Fire Station No. 2, located at 952 East Market Street in Akron’s Middlebury neighborhood, is being replaced with construction starting this summer.

“While it is bittersweet to retire Fire Station No. 2 after 76 years of faithful service to the community, we are proud to be honoring the rich history of this station and the neighborhood as we construct a new, modern, safe and efficient facility,” Mayor Horrigan said. “I once again thank the Akron public for supporting Issue 4 last November, making it possible for us to make these critically important investments in the safety and stability of our city.”

The new Station No. 2 will be constructed on the same site in order to maintain the existing service area. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and to be completed by summer 2019. The City is finalizing plans for maintaining operations during the construction period, including utilizing nearby stations and/or a temporary site nearby.

The City has engaged Hasenstab Architects for the architectural design, and KZF Design is providing fire-station-specific consulting and expertise to ensure the new station meets the latest industry standards and best practices. The design of the new station will preserve and incorporate historic elements of the existing station, including the iconic “Boy and Girl Under Umbrella” fountain, which was donated to the City in the 1880’s.

Highlights of the new Fire Station No. 2 include:

  • Three full apparatus bays (one more than the existing station)
  • 500 sq. ft. of office space for an Akron Police Department satellite office
  • Living quarters for six firefighter/medics
  • Training room with a triage station to serve emergency walk-in patients
  • Equipment decontamination facilities
  • Air drying hose tower

Preliminary renderings, subject to final changes, are available here.

“We are thrilled to be preparing for the construction of Station No. 2, and planning for the construction of Station No. 12 soon after,” Fire Chief Clarence Tucker said. “It is rewarding to be able to provide our firefighter/medics with the new safety equipment and facilities they need to keep our neighborhoods and families safe. This wouldn’t be possible without the funding from Issue 4.”

This year the City will begin the design work to replace Station No. 12, located at 1852 W. Market Street, across from Acme No. 1.  Construction on Station No. 12 is expected to begin in the second half of 2019.
