Akron, Ohio, March 25, 2020 – As the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic, there are individuals across the globe—including right here in our own community—who are making an incredible difference when it matters most. Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan is asking residents and organizations to share stories about how they, or someone they know, are taking steps to boost community morale during this crisis.
“The Akron community has shined brightly during these dark times,” Mayor Horrigan said. “Maybe it was someone who delivered food to your door; or someone who picked up medication for an elderly neighbor. It might be a business that donated their protective gear to healthcare workers or paid an artist to perform a virtual concert for their staff. We want to highlight and recognize the local heroes who are helping all of us stay together socially, mentally and emotionally - even while remaining physically apart.”
Even in the midst of the crisis, people are making sure those staying at home stay connected and cared for, and are carrying out acts of kindness, while adhering to public health guidelines related to social distancing. Mayor Horrigan wants to highlight these creative solutions throughout the challenging days ahead.
“This pandemic has reminded us how connected we are as human beings, neighbors and friends,” Mayor Horrigan said. “At a time when many of us are tempted to react out of fear, across our community, Akronites are proving that it is possible to respond with compassion, creativity and incredible generosity.”
