City of Akron Awarded Partial Funding for Evans Avenue Bridge Project to Improve Safety and Convenience

Akron, Ohio, August 23, 2017- The City of Akron will be receiving $5.7 million of FastLane funding, for the construction of a bridge along Evans Avenue over CSX and Metro RTA railroad tracks. The FastLane grant will cover approximately 60% of the total construction cost for the project.

Plan development for this project has been prepared for a few years, and the City has been aggressively pursuing funding from multiple sources to cover the construction cost. The City of Akron Engineering Bureau filed for a nationally and very competitive Fastlane grant on two occasions in the hopes of receiving funding assistance for construction of this project and was fortunate to receive funding in the second round.

Mayor Dan Horrigan credits dedicated City Hall staff for being tenacious in pursing grant dollars. "As is the case in many of our projects, our Engineering Bureau seeks any and all available state and federal dollars to cobble together enough funding to accomplish these expensive and necessary projects."

The project consists of constructing a pair of bridges to realign Evans Avenue to remove a potentially dangerous at-grade crossing with both CSX and Metro RTA railroads. "It is important for us to improve safety and service to all our residents and visitors who utilize this route," Mayor Horrigan added. "This bridge will greatly improve vehicular safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, and will also eliminate traffic delays caused by hourly railroad traffic,"

Improvements include the construction of a pair of bridges over the Metro RTA and CSX railroad tracks, and reconstruction of asphalt roadway along with concrete curb and gutter and storm sewers. The project will begin at Home Avenue and head east affecting approximately 2,000 linear feet of roadway. A map of the proposed improvements is shown above.

The City is continuing to pursue additional grant funds to cover the remainder of the project cost. Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2018, and be completed by Fall 2019.
