City of Akron Press Release

Akron, Ohio (October 7, 2013) –Keep Akron Beautiful, the County of Summit, and the City of Akron invite the public to the second countywide Summit of Sustainability (SOSA) awards program breakfast on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at The University of Akron’s Quaker Station Ballroom.   Registration is at 7:30 a.m., breakfast and program begin at 8:00 a.m.  Robert Buchanan will be the keynote speaker at the event that will showcase the best examples of sustainability, e.g. commercial energy efficiency, waste reduction and employee engagement,  in five categories:  companies with 25 or less employees, companies with 26-250 employees, companies with more than 250 employees, nonprofit/community organizations and the public sector (governmental/schools).

Robert Buchanan founded Polar Bears Internationalas an organization with a focus on polar bear research and proactive education on how to conserve the great white bears and their habitat.  With that mission, PBI has attracted some of the world’s finest scientists, zoologists, land management professionals, eco-tour operators, educators, government agencies and other NGOs. Funding provided by PBI helped support research that led to the listing of the polar bear as a threatened species by the U.S. government. Robert decided to focus his energies on changing the mindset of how humans care for this planet.

“No one seems to disagree that it is imperative that we leave this planet with clean air and clean water, so the Arctic Action Teams were formed,” said Buchanan. “It is human beings that have helped to cause this problem and only human beings can help fix it.  The loss of the Arctic and Antarctic ice would have a devastating effect. I encourage everyone to go to www.myactions.orgto learn how you can help.”

“To be sustainable is to balance economic, environmental and social concerns,” noted Paula Davis, President of Keep Akron Beautiful.   “We need to constantly think about how actions today will affect future generations. It is about helping our community save energy and money, create more transportation choices, preserve clean air and bring economic prosperity in the process.”

With those efforts in mind,  SOSA keynote speaker, Robert Buchanan, will be presenting his prestigious Founders Award to the Summit Food Policy Coalition for shedding light on the issues surrounding the food system - from growing food locally to reducing food waste in landfills -  and for shaping an agenda for moving toward sustainable solutions. The SFPC steering committee includes volunteers and staff from 11 agencies, nonprofits, and businesses. Following the lead of The County of Summit and the City of Akron, six other governmental agencies have adopted Food Charter Resolutions.
