Published: 06-21-2016

Akron, Ohio, June 21, 2016 –   The City of Akron, in collaboration with the LeBron James Family Foundation, will host a free community-wide celebration for the MVP of the NBA Championship Series on Thursday, June 23, at Lock 3 in Downtown Akron.

“This is a historic moment for the City of Akron,” said Mayor Dan Horrigan. “We’re coming together to show our pride and gratitude to our hometown hero. The theme of the Akron event is “We Are Family,” one of the mottos of the LeBron James Family Foundation.

The event follows the Cavaliers championship victory on Sunday, which is being celebrated officially by the team and the city of Cleveland Wednesday with a parade featuring all of the team members.

“LeBron also wanted an opportunity to speak to the people of Akron and the children in his programs that he has always said are his inspiration,” said the Mayor. “The students in his Wheels for Education and Akron I Promise Network will be our special guests. They are very much a part of his life as a player and as a leader.”

Thursday’s celebration of LeBron will also feature other special guests from the community who will pay tribute to his civic and community accomplishments, “This is an Akron celebration,” said Horrigan. We hope the local community will turn out to celebrate this great victory and honor his work in giving back to the community.”

The program on the Lock 3 stage begins at 8:00 PM. Mayor Horrigan will make a special presentation to LeBron on behalf of the city.
