Mayor Dan Horrigan Swears in Akron Police Chief Stephen Mylett

Akron, Ohio, August 19, 2021 — Today, Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan formally swore in the new Chief of the Akron Police Department, Stephen (Steve) L. Mylett. Mylett was recruited through a nationwide search and was selected through a public engagement process, including a community survey and a public town hall. Chief Mylett will lead a department of 447 officers and supervisors, 43 reserve officers and 33 civilians and manage an annual budget of approximately $70 million.
“Today is an important day for our entire community as we officially welcome Chief Mylett and his family to Akron,” Mayor Dan Horrigan said. “This is a challenging time to be in law enforcement, and it takes a strong, ethical leader to not only inspire a department but also help unite a community when facing adversity. I believe that Chief Mylett is that leader for our Akron Police Department and I am confident that he will work with the community to develop a pathway toward greater security and trust.”
Steve Mylett grew up on Long Island, New York and served in the Air Force before starting his law enforcement career in 1989 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He steadily moved up the ranks in that Department before reaching Assistant Chief of Police in 2011. He was then hired by the City of Southlake, Texas to serve as Chief of Police where he served until 2015. Since 2015, he has served as the Chief of the Bellevue, Washington Police Department. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences from Midwestern State University in Texas and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management from Sam Houston State University.
“I am honored to serve the Akron community as the next Chief of the Akron Police Department,” Chief Mylett said. “Reducing violent crime and enhancing community trust will be top priorities. I look forward to engaging with the men and women of this department and with the community at large to develop a shared vision for a safer Akron.”
Steve and his wife of 30 years, JoAnn, have relocated to Akron. They have four children and two grandchildren.
