World Water Day

City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Stephanie York
Published: 03-20-2014

On Saturday, March 22, 2014, people around the world will celebrate “World Water Day” to recognize the importance of a safe drinking water supply.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 as “World Day for Water.”  Since then, “World Water Day” has been a focal point to annually recognize continuing water issues, such as the connection between water and health, sanitation, the world food supply, and the growth of cities.   The theme for 2014 is “Water and Energy” to highlight how water can be a source of energy and how water relies upon energy to be purified and pumped.

“The City of Akron continues to benefit from a water supply that is abundant and free from contamination problems,” noted Mayor Don Plusquellic.  “Over the past several years, we have advanced our treatment technology through collaboration with international partners, such as Israel and the Netherlands.”

The Akron effort to incorporate international expertise to improve operations has been officially named the “Akron Global Water Alliance” or AGWA.  Through AGWA, Akron expects to identify the best technologies worldwide to use within the City and to distribute to other water systems in the United States.
