Akron, Ohio, Sept. 1, 2022 — Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and President & CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina, Jim Mullen, will join local leaders from across Ohio at the White House on September 7. The White House plans to bring local elected officials and community leaders together to highlight how Biden-Harris Administration initiatives are positively impacting their regions. Ohio officials will be the first to participate in the White House’s “Communities in Action: Building a Better America” effort.

“I’m honored to attend the White House event and speak on behalf of the Akron community about the ways in which this administration is helping our residents,” said Mayor Horrigan. “Thanks to the $145M in American Rescue Plan Act funding that Akron has received, we've been able to invest in areas of critical need in our community including housing repair, community and youth violence prevention, and utility support. The City has worked alongside key local partners including the County of Summit, Summit County Public Health, Community Action Akron Summit, and so many others, to get federal funding quickly and effectively into the community.”

“This invitation to the White House truly recognizes the determination and passion that United Way, the City of Akron and other key partners have to better our community,” said Jim Mullen. “Without this federal funding and our collaborative and innovative group of local partners, we wouldn’t have been able to help nearly 8,000 unique households in our community. To date, Summit County has spent a total of $56M of this federal funding on housing, rental and utility assistance. I’m truly privileged to be representing Akron in Washington DC.”

Both the City of Akron and the United Way of Summit & Medina will be sharing facts, figures and real time updates from the White House event on September 7.
