Mayor Horrigan Issues Update on Police Chief Search

City of Akron Press Release
Published: 06-21-2021

Akron, Ohio, June 21, 2021 — Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan made the following statement regarding the City’s search for a new Chief of Police:

“This morning, Eric Hawkins withdrew his name from consideration for the position of Chief of the Akron Police Department.  I greatly appreciated getting to know Chief Hawkins through this search, and for the thoughtful way he engaged with us and the Akron community.  I have deep respect for his decision to remain in his current position in Albany and I wish him the best in the next stage of his distinguished career.”

“I have been greatly impressed with the pool of candidates for this position at every step in the process, and am still confident that we will be selecting a highly qualified Chief of Police to lead the Akron Police Department in the coming weeks.”

Last week, Mayor Horrigan hosted a Community Town Hall where the finalists for the Chief position answered questions from Akron citizens.  The video is available here.  Members of the public wishing to share their thoughts on the Akron Police Chief search are encouraged to email them to [email protected] or call the Mayor’s Action Center at 3-1-1 or (330) 375-2311.
