Published: 03-31-2017

Akron, Ohio, April 1, 2017 – The City of Akron is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer through May 26, 2017 at The City intends to hire a minimum of 15 police officers, initially.
“Serving the residents of this City as a police officer is among the most challenging and rewarding calls to public service,” Mayor Horrigan said. “Our officers are our frontline ambassadors in the neighborhoods – providing direct assistance to residents in need and keeping our community safe. Applicants should be enthusiastic about improving the Akron community and be prepared to meet the demands of an evolving and dynamic law enforcement environment.”
The exam is planned for June 23 & 24, 2017. Once established, the eligible list generated from the test will remain in place for 18 months. Historically the City has hired multiple classes of officers from an eligibility list over that period.
Candidates must meet several baseline qualifications to be eligible, including:
 21-35 years old at the time of the written examination
 High school diploma or GED
 Valid driver’s license
Candidates must pass written tests, a physical fitness test, a background investigation and a polygraph examination. Final selection is contingent upon passage of a medical and psychological evaluation after receiving a conditional job offer. The City of Akron also awards bonus points to those candidates who pass the written test and meet a residency requirement, have served in active duty in the United States armed forces for more than 180 days and were honorably discharged, and/or completed accredited college course work.
Compensation for an entry level police officer begins with a training wage, then increases to approximately $53,000 a year, and includes a generous benefits package consisting of comprehensive medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance at no cost, paid vacation time, sick leave and 14 paid holidays.
