Statement of Mayor Horrigan on Passing of John Glenn

City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Ellen Lander Nischt, Press Secretary
Published: 12-08-2016

Akron, Ohio, December 8, 2016

“It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge that former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn has passed away at the age of 95.

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn piloted the Friendship 7 spacecraft into orbit, becoming the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth – and altering our national identity forever.  Throughout his long and distinguished life and career, John Glenn stood apart as an exceptional patriot and true American hero.  As Ohioans, it is with great pride that we claim John as one of our own.

As a combat pilot in WWII and Korea, he fearlessly defended the freedoms we hold dear.  As a pioneer of space flight and later the oldest human being to travel in space at age 77, he broadened our collective dreams of what was possible.  And as a U.S. Senator, John Glenn served his fellow Americans with wisdom, humility, and conviction.

He will be dearly missed for his courage, authenticity, and quiet strength.  John Glenn – Ohio’s native son and one of the true, great Americans – will remain forever in our hearts.  We honor his legacy and extend our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.  May the memory of his life be a comfort and a blessing to all who knew him.”

– Mayor Dan Horrigan
