Mayor Horrigan Introduces 2017 Capital Budget to Council

City of Akron Press Release

Published: 01-23-2017

Akron, Ohio, January 23, 2017 – Today, Mayor Horrigan presented Council with his $375 million plan for the 2017 Capital Improvement & Community Development Program, commonly referred to as the “Capital Budget.”

The 2017 Capital Budget provides a plan for improvements for City streets, sidewalks, sewers, water lines, parks, public facilities, economic development projects, and police and fire equipment planned throughout the coming year. The Mayor and administration prepare the Capital Budget for City Council’s consideration and review.

The objectives of the Capital Budget are to construct or rehabilitate facilities vital to Akron residents, reduce long-term operating costs, encourage private investment to increase the City's tax base, and leverage federal, state and private funds wherever possible.

“We have provided Council with a relatively lean capital budget proposal for 2017,” Mayor Horrigan said of the plan. “I wish we had the resources to invest significantly more in our public infrastructure, particularly in roads and public safety, but after factoring in state and federal funding cuts, our EPA-mandated sewer projects, and our existing debt obligations, our remaining resources are limited. My proposal for the remaining dollars prioritizes projects that will improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods and support long-term growth in the City.”

The proposed 2017 Capital Budget represents a total investment of $375 million. Council will hold a public hearing on the plan this evening at 7PM in Council chambers and will review the Mayor’s Capital Budget proposal in detail with the City administration in the coming weeks before the final Capital Budget is passed.
