City of Akron Press Release
Published: 02-02-2022

Akron, Ohio, February 2, 2022 — The City of Akron has issued a snow emergency parking ban starting at 4:00 PM this afternoon and continuing until further notice in advance of the approaching winter storm.  The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the City of Akron and Summit County that is in effect from 10:00 PM tonight until 7:00 AM Friday morning for heavy mixed precipitation and snowfall with forecast accumulations of 7-12 inches and a light glaze of ice.

As part of Mayor Horrigan and Akron City Council’s five-point improvement strategy, earlier notification of parking bans was recommended to increase public participation in getting their vehicles off the street to facilitate the snow and ice control operations increasing both the efficiency and effectiveness of these operations. With the heavy rain and snow melt for this event, the parking ban will also allow access to any blocked or plugged up inlets to alleviate these issues.

Parking bans are issued to facilitate the clearing of the streets and to expedite the free flow of vehicular traffic.  Motor vehicles shall not be parked on the main streets or residential streets during parking bans.  All motor vehicles parked prior to the issuance shall be removed by the owners or operators thereof.  Any vehicle parked in violation of this prohibition shall be removed (towed) by the City and the owner shall be subject to the penalties, fees and costs established for a parking infraction per Akron City code.

The City plans on servicing all of Akron’s public roads during this storm event. You do not need to submit a service request. Putting in a request will not expedite your street for plowing. If you have additional requests, please contact the Mayor’s Action Center at 3-1-1, (330) 375-2311 or www.akronohio.gov/311.
