Akron, Ohio, March 13, 2019 – Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan will host his third Health Equity Summit at the John S. Knight Center, on March 19, 2019 from 8:30 AM to 3 PM. The theme of this year’s Summit is “Connecting the Dots: Connecting Social Determinants of Health to Health Equity.”

The featured keynote speaker is national award-winning psychologist, professor and leading expert on anxiety disorders among African-Americans, Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett.  Other guest speakers include Reem Aly, Vice President, Health Policy Institute of Ohio; Iris Harvey, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio; and Dr. Justin Catlett from Summa Health. The program, presented by Medical Mutual, has been approved for 4.0 hours of continuing education units (CEU) for Counselors and Social Workers.

The Summit will also provide an update from representatives of Full Term First Birthday, the infant vitality collective created to coordinate strategies to reduce infant mortality in Akron and surrounding communities. The three-year strategic plan for Full Term First Birthday will also be released to the community during the Summit.

“My vision—and the vision of our Full Term First Birthday partners—is to empower every expectant Akron mom to deliver at full term, so that every Akron baby has a fighting chance to celebrate a first birthday,” Mayor Horrigan said. “Through this Summit and the work of my Health Equity Ambassador, Tamiyka Rose, we are coordinating resources to ensure all our community agencies and care providers are aligned toward that goal.”

Registration for the March 19th Health Equity Summit is free and available at akronsummit.eventbrite.com. Registered guests will be provided with a complimentary lunch, thanks to generous support of platinum sponsors Summa Health, Summit County Public Health and Cleveland Clinic Akron General.
