Akron, Ohio (February 23, 2015) - Community members will come together for the community’s first Big Dig event on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 p.m. at Findley Community Learning Center to remove barriers, such as snow covered sidewalks, by assisting with clearing the ice and snow from sidewalks. The event will be held weather permitting*.

The Big Dig is being spearheaded by Safe Kids Summit County and Akron Safe Routes to Schools to raise awareness about sidewalk and pedestrian safety during the winter.

Free snow shovels will be provided by Safe Kids Summit County to eligible Big Dig participants who sign a Hold Harmless Agreement and pledge to keep their sidewalks clean.

Walking is a basic form of transportation that most people rely on every day. The Big Dig also will focus on raising awareness about safe options for kids to walk to and from school so that they avoid walking in the street and risk being struck by a motor vehicle.

Lets show that “Akron Neighbors Care!”

For more information, contact Andy Davis, Akron Safe Routes to Schools Coordinator at City of Akron Traffic Engineering at 330.375.2851 ext. 7840.

*Will follow Akron Public Schools weather related closing schedule.
