Summit County Public Health along with Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan, Summit County Executive Russ Pry, and the Akron Marathon hosted a press conference to kick-off the 100 Million Steps Akron Walking Challenge on April 6.

“100 Million Steps Akron” is a city-wide walking challenge project aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and stimulating civic engagement by uniting the Akron community around a single goal: to collectively walk 100,000,000 steps. The 10 week challenge welcomes individuals, friends, families, community organizations and local businesses to challenge themselves and others to grab their sneakers, get out, and get active. Participants can compete individually or form teams. Partnering on the challenge are the City of Akron, County of Summit, Akron Marathon and Summit County Public Health.

100 Million Steps Akron invites all community members to participate. The first 1,000 individuals to register for the challenge at will be able to register for the challenge at no cost. Once registered, participants can set daily goals and track their steps by logging activities manually on the website or smartphone app, or by syncing an approved fitness device or pedometer.

Participants are encouraged to engage with others and share their progress in the challenge by sharing photos and posts with friends, family, and co-workers on social media using #AkronSteps100.

The challenge will officially begin on Monday, April 18, 2016 and the final step count will take place at the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series 8k & 1 Mile presented by National Interstate on June 25, 2016.
