AKRON, Ohio – August 29, 2017 - Waste Management of Ohio, Inc. donated $5,000 to the City of Akron to help educate and encourage more residents to recycle. The donation is part of Waste Management’s Think Green® Grants program, a nationwide effort empowering the development of local solutions designed to improve community environments.  Waste Management’s Akron Greenstar Recycling Plant which processes the City’s recyclables also donated an additional $2,500 to further help the City’s recycling education.

The grant will support the City of Akron’s curbside recycling collection program by improving outreach on what materials are recyclable and how they should be handled as part of the program.

“The City of Akron is thrilled to receive this grant to help increase participation in our curbside recycling collection program,” said Mayor Dan Horrigan.  “Its essential that all Akron residents understand how to recycle properly, so that our community can reap the full environmental benefits of this program and realize all available cost-savings.”

Currently 45,000 of the 62,000 trash collection customers (approximately 70 percent) participate in the recycling program. The Think Green® grant will fund a public awareness campaign that includes banners, flyers and social media posts.

“Waste Management is excited to partner with the City of Akron to grow and improve its recycling efforts,” said Vince Crawford, public sector manager of Waste Management of Ohio. “This campaign is a terrific way to educate the public on what can be recycled and how to correctly recycle, which will reduce contamination and improve the program for everyone.”

The Waste Management Think Green® Grants are part of the environmental services company’s commitment to encourage the development and sustainability of environmental solutions that improve communities.
