City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Ellen Lander Nischt, Press Secretary
Published: 04-27-2018

Akron, Ohio, April 27, 2018  The City of Akron is planning to restripe Wilbeth Road (from I-77 to Arlington Street) and East Exchange Street (from Arlington Street to Fountain Street), as  part of an upcoming Safe Routes to Schools infrastructure project.

The proposed improvements along East Exchange Street and Wilbeth Road will consist of having the existing four-lane section re-striped to three standard width vehicle lanes, with one through lane in each direction and a center two way left turn lane. The pavement section will also include dedicated bicycle lanes and parking lanes where applicable. These changes will provide safer, calmer traffic flow for vehicles by creating a ‘right sized’ roadway, which will also allow better options for cyclists and pedestrians.

The estimated total project construction cost is $400,000. The proposed project will be constructed within the existing right-of-way and will not result in substantial impacts to environmental (ecological, cultural, hazardous waste sites, etc.) resources.

Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2018. All interested persons are invited to provide comments, statements, and/or exhibits to the following contact:

Nicholas Meyer
EIT Project Manager – City of Akron Engineering Bureau
166 South High Street
Akron, Ohio 44308
Phone: (330) 375-2072

The final date for submission of comments will be May 27, 2018.

The environmental review, consultation and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried-out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 11, 2015 and executed by FHWA and ODOT.
