The City of Akron is taking nominations for the local individual who exemplifies humanitarianism at its best to present with the 23rd annual Charles Salem Humanitarian Award. The person receiving this prestigious award will be honored at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., program to be held on Sunday, January 18, 2015, 5:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, 519 N. Main St., in Akron.

Charles Salem was one of the Akron’s great humanitarians.  For many years in our community Salem was an advocate for social justice and a mentor to young and old alike.

“Charlie was a kind, generous and charitable man, who lived to give back to our community in numerous ways,” said Mayor Don Plusquellic.  “He was a positive influence and a strong advocate for social justice and worked to improve relations between all our citizens.”

Salem chaired the City of Akron’s Human and Community Relations Commission, where his leadership is well documented and missed greatly.  Twenty years ago the Commission began honoring Salem’s name and good works with this award.  Today, the Mayor continues to honor those who, like Charles Salem, serve the Akron community over and beyond the normal, through their volunteer efforts.

When nominating someone for this esteemed honor, keep in mind Charles Salem’s outstanding community service, high ethical ideals, fairness, goodwill and friendship.  The nominee should demonstrate similar qualities in contribution to our City.  Also, the nominee’s service should not have been part of his or her job.  It must be from a purely volunteer perspective.

Deadline is Friday, January 9, 2015.  Nominations may be mailed to Billy Soule, 200 Municipal Building, 166 South High Street, Akron, 44308; faxed to (330) 375-2468 or, emailed to [email protected].
