City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Ellen Lander Nischt
Published: 07-02-2020

Akron, Ohio, July 1, 2020 – All municipal offices will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, 2020 in observance of Independence Day. As a reminder, physical access to municipal buildings remains very limited during the City’s response to COVID-19, and will remain limited until further notice. City offices and services are still accessible via the phone, website, and email, but will be closed for business on Friday, July 3rd.

There will be no delay in trash/recycle collections this week. This will be a normal collection week as the legal holiday falls on Saturday. To get reminders and alerts, like this, about your household’s curb service schedule, please download the Akron Recycles app free on Android or Apple devices.

The City will host four professional, coordinated neighborhood fireworks displays on Saturday, July 4th beginning at 9:45 pm. The displays will be launched from the Akron Executive Airport, Patterson Park Ballfields, Summit Lake, and Downtown Akron.  A perimeter around these sites will be secured, and spectators will not be permitted to park or walk close to the launching grounds.

In partnership with WONE and the Rubber City Radio Group, spectators can share in a patriotic soundtrack for the program, no matter where they are, by tuning their radios to 97.5 FM.

As a reminder, fireworks displays are not legal in Ohio without a permit. Residents are encouraged to refrain from setting off their own fireworks, bottle rockets, firecrackers, and sparklers.  Fireworks can be extremely dangerous if they are not handled properly, and can cause injuries and damage that will quickly ruin a holiday celebration.  Instead, individuals and families are strongly encouraged to watch and enjoy the City’s professional fireworks displays from the safety of their own home or neighborhood.

For media inquiries regarding the City of Akron’s Fourth of July fireworks displays, please reach out to Chris Griffith, Lock 3 Coordinator at [email protected] or 330-289-5746.
