The City of Akron’s Drinking Water Supply Bureau is proud to announce it has been presented with the prestigious American Society of Landscape Architects - Ohio Chapter Honor Award.  The Award was given to Akron and Akron’s consulting partner Environmental Design Group for the creation of the Upper Cuyahoga River Watershed Master Plan.

The Watershed Master Plan provides a comprehensive analysis and long term vision for the Upper Cuyahoga River that supplies 300,000 people with clean drinking water throughout the City of Akron and many neighboring communities. With the responsibility to manage a watershed for this purpose, the City of Akron now has a completed assessment and method for better understanding the positive and negative influences on the source water.

Through the utilization of the latest in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, Akron mapped and analyzed both the natural features that provide natural water quality protection, as well as development influences that could be potential impacts to water quality.  The natural features include items such as vegetation, soil characteristics, wetlands, land topography and riparian areas. The man-made characteristics include items such as land use, transportation networks, and property information.  By compiling this information digitally, it can then be utilized to identify, evaluate, compare and rank numerous source water protection and property management strategies.

The Akron Water Supply Bureau, Watershed Division manages more than 200 square miles of Upper Cuyahoga River Watershed and nearly 20,000 acres of City owned property.  The watershed provides approximately 35 million gallons a day of drinking water to customers throughout the City of Akron and many other communities within Summit County.
