City of Akron Press Release
Published: 07-18-2016
Akron, Ohio, July 18, 2016 – Mayor Dan Horrigan’s nominees for the newly reestablished Senior Citizens Commission received approval from Akron City Council Monday evening. The Commission has been inactive for nearly a decade, limiting the ability of the city’s mature population of adults to have a voice in the community.
The Commission, created in the Akron Municipal Code, has ten members – five residents age 60 or older, and five representatives from agencies involved in the planning, or delivery of services to the mature adult population in the city.
The following individuals were appointed to staggered terms:
Ken Harmon, Akron resident, East Akron
Brenna Herman, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority
Karen Hrdlicka, Mature Services
Francis Ladd, Summit County Job and Family Services
Myoshi Levy, Akron resident, Summit Lake
Tom Nikola, Akron resident, Firestone Park
Jim Perge, Akron resident, North Hill
Susan Sigman, Direction Home/Area Agency on Aging
Harvey Sterns, Akron resident, West Akron
Connie Swain, Summit County Probate Court
“We have to make sure we are meeting the needs of Akron’s growing senior population, and the Commission will help to ensure we do,” remarked Mayor Horrigan. “I’ve asked the Commission to review existing community reports and make recommendations on how we can best serve our seniors.”
“As this segment of the population grows in our city, and across the country, I believe it is important to have representatives of their community share with us first-hand their needs and how we can effectively meet them,” added Terry Albanese, Assistant to the Mayor/Education, Health & Families.
The Mayor’s Office and the Department of Neighborhood Assistance will staff the Commission.
