Akron, Ohio (January 8, 2014) - The City of Akron is sponsoring its 8th annual Firefighter’s Chili Challenge, on Friday, January 10th, 2014 from 11:00am to 1:30 pm (or until the Chili runs out) at Lock 3 on South Main Street in Downtown Akron.

Akron firefighters have once again challenged others to see who can concoct the best chili for Downtown workers.  The famous firehouse chili-makers will square off against other chili cooks, with all proceeds benefitting Akron Children’s Hospital’s Burn Unit.

Five dollars buys chili eaters five tickets that can be used for five cups of chili.  Additional chili samples will be available for $1.50.  Beverages will be $2.00.

This year’s contestants include the Akron Fire Department with Chuck Norris’ Oatmeal, Akron General Hospital serving 100 Year Chili, the Akron Police Department cooking up Hot Pursuit, ARCADIS preparing Smokin’ Salamander Chili, and Summa Health System plating Texas 100 MPH Chili.

Challengers compete for a variety of awards but really want to win the Peoples’ Choice Award and the Judges’ Choice Award. Last year the Akron Fire Department won Peoples’ Choice.

A panel of celebrity judges will decide the best of the bunch, and all entrants will compete for bragging rights with the “Peoples’ Choice” award, voted on by those attending.

Free parking is available in the State Street parking deck.
