APD Awarded 2015 Traffic Enforcement Grants

             Akron Police Chief James D. Nice announced today that the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS), Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO), awarded two traffic enforcement grants to the Akron Police Department for the year 2015.  The Ohio Traffic Safety Office awarded $26,759.21 in federal traffic safety funding for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) and $40,138.81 was awarded for the Impaired Driving Enforcement Program (IDEP).  

          “We are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to reduce traffic related fatal and serious injury crashes in Ohio,” said Chief Nice.

          The Akron Police Department will use the grant funds to conduct high visibility enforcement in order to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashed in the City of Akron.

          The funds are passed through the Ohio Traffic Safety Office from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and youthful drivers.

          Competitive grant proposals were accepted and reviewed by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, with funds awarded to projects that will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal crashed or significantly improving traffic safety systems.
