Akron, Ohio, July 17, 2018 – Law enforcement representatives from more than ten local and state law enforcement agencies will carry an extra piece of equipment on Friday, July 20 at Mud Run Golf Course and Driving Range; a golf club will be added to their tool belt that day. The fourth annual Law Enforcement Education Day better known as “Putting with Police” will be held in conjunction with The First Tee of Greater Akron to give local youth the opportunity to interact with local law enforcement agents with an added twist, the chance to hit a putt or long drive with local police. This unique event is sponsored by a grant from Toro through First Tee’s national Grow the Game Program to encourage local First Tee chapters to spread the word about the benefits of golf.
Area agencies participating include the Akron Police Department, Bath Township Police Department, Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Springfield Township Police Department, Boston Heights Police Department, Village of Peninsula Police Department, and Ohio State Highway Patrol. Complimentary food will be provided for youth who attend.
Phil Young, Independent Police Auditor for the City of Akron, is working with representatives of The First Tee to bring students and agencies together. Young is most excited about the interaction between the local youth and agency representatives. “Not only does this give kids the chance to interact with police in a lighthearted, supportive environment, but it also gives the police a chance to talk to local youth about their community and encourage them about school, behavior and future goals. We are excited to be coordinating this community engagement event for the fourth year.”
The event highlights the importance of mentoring youth in the Akron community. More than just a game, golf teaches life lessons that are reinforced through The First Tee’s nine core values—honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. The First Tee of Greater Akron is a non-profit organization, located at Mud Run Golf Course & Driving Range located on South Hawkins, which teaches youth healthy skills and habits through the sport of golf.
