Akron’s Eighth Annual Neighbors Day is just about a month away, on Saturday, May 17, 2014, and Mayor Don Plusquellic is encouraging residents to get involved.

“Neighbors Day Akron is designed to help residents get to know one another,” stated Mayor Don Plusquellic.  “The concept is simple:  Know your neighbors, and friendlier, safer neighborhoods will follow.”

Residents can sign up to host any number of events, such as:

  • Invite neighbors over for tea or coffee
  • Have a cookout with people from your block
  • Organize a pot luck picnic or an ice cream social
  • Host games or sports for neighbor children (adults can mingle while the children play)
  • Organize a neighborhood cleanup day
  • Weed or plan flowers in a  public space or for a neighbor in need
  • Organize a street party (application and permit required)
  • Plan an event that fits your personality and your neighborhood

Registering is fast and easy; just call 3-1-1, the City of Akron's Information Center, between the hours of 7:30 am-8:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. - noon on Saturday (from any residential phone inside Akron, press 311. Upon registering with the City, you will gain access to a number of benefits:

  • Get help and access to City Services you may need to make your event a success, like mowing a green space, or closing a street (street closure applications must be submitted by May 9).
  • As a registered Neighbors Day captain you will be permitted additional trash bags outside of your City of Akron container to be picked up on your regularly scheduled pick-up day following your May 17th gathering (this is a one-time pick-up only).
