Akron, Ohio, July 27, 2018 – The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council is hosting a “Dare to Lead” teen leadership bootcamp, on Thursday, August 2nd, for area students entering 9th through 11th grade in the fall. This daylong workshop is the first of three events designed to prepare participants for a dynamic 2018-2019 school year.
The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council is a newly realigned initiative of Mayor Dan Horrigan, which has replaced the former Akron PeaceMakers. The teen group, comprised of high school students from the greater Akron area, is designed to help local students build character and develop leadership skills that will enable them to become positive role models and active problem solvers. The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council also gives young leaders a behind-the-scenes look at local government and a voice in City Hall.
The “Dare to Lead” bootcamp event on August 2nd is an intensive leadership training that will help area teens gain the tools necessary to positively impact their communities. Participating students will learn how to direct projects and advocate for causes, plan and facilitate groups, lead their peers, and communicate and use social media in a professional and effective manner.
This rigorous bootcamp will challenge teen participants and push them to exceed their expectations. The workshop will be held at St. Vincent – St. Mary High School from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The cost is $35.00 per teen ($20.00 for members of the Leadership Council). A limited number of spots are still available on a first-come basis.
Teens completing the training can also take part in a Community Service Day on Saturday, August 4th at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, followed by a Teen Speak Out rally at Lock 3 Akron on Tuesday, August 7th.
