AKRON, Ohio, August 22, 2019 – The City of Akron Great Streets Initiative will award 18 façade improvement grants totaling $387,000 to businesses within the 11 Great Streets designated districts – Copley Road East, Ellet, Firestone Park, Goodyear Heights, Kenmore Blvd, Maple Valley, Merriman Valley, Middlebury, North Hill, Wallhaven, and West Hill.

The Great Streets initiative began in 2018 and is designed to support and work collaboratively with business and property owners in these districts to promote increased business development and retention, greater community engagement, safer neighborhoods, improved transportation conditions, and enhanced aesthetics, urban design and public space.

Applicants within eligible districts could apply for matching grants of up to $30,000 to aid in improving the exterior facades of their properties, including signage, doors, walkways, roofing, parking lots, awnings and outdoor lighting. Over the past two years, a total of 61 grants have been awarded.

"The Great Streets initiative is all about reinvigorating our neighborhood business districts to create vitality and viability in these corridors. These small businesses and organizations are the lifeblood of our economy and community. By lifting them up through these investments, we create more opportunity right here in our own neighborhoods," Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said.

"Having access to funds has always been an obstacle to these local small businesses," said Deputy Mayor for Integrated Development James Hardy. "These grants fill that accessibility gap, providing the funding to make transformational improvements to these important establishments."
