
City Announces Start of Contractor Registration Program

Akron, Ohio, January 31, 2017 — Beginning tomorrow, February 1, 2017, the City of Akron will require construction contractors to obtain a Contractor Registration from the City prior to performing work in Akron that requires a permit issued by either the City of Akron, State of Ohio, or Summit County Building Standards. Akron City Council passed legislation in December 2016 making this registration mandatory.
“The purpose of the Contractor Registration Program is to ensure that all contractors doing work in Akron are properly licensed and insured are that they are withholding and paying their fair share of taxes,” Mayor Horrigan said. “Homeowners who wish to perform work on their own property will not be affected by this registration requirement.”
Registration forms are available at the City of Akron Plans and Permits Center and online at http://www.akronohio.gov/cms/engineering/planspermits/index.html. The initial Contractor Registration application fee is $100. All City of Akron Contractor Registrations will expire on the next June 30th after the registration is issued. However, Contractor Registrations obtained between February 1, 2017 and June 30, 2017 will not expire until June 30, 2018.

Before applying for a Contractor Registration, all contractors must first obtain an Income Tax Registration Number from the City’s Income Tax Division, if they do not already have one. Contractors interested in obtaining an Income Tax Registration Number should contact the City of Akron Income Tax Division, as follows:

Any contractor who fails to register or obtain the proper permits, as required, may be subjected to civil and/or criminal penalties.
