Akron, Ohio, September 5, 2019 – Mayor Dan Horrigan is proud to announce that the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC), in partnership with the Akron Financial Empowerment Center and Huntington Bank, will be hosting FREE adult financial education workshops on Tuesday, September 10th and Tuesday, October 22nd from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The workshops will be held at the Akron Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) at 1060 Kenmore Boulevard, Akron, 44314.  The FEC, a program of the City of Akron and The United Way, provides financial coaching to individuals—helping them to acquire the skills to budget and save, develop healthy banking relationships and raise their credit score.

“Providing an opportunity for adults to sharpen their financial literacy is important, and empowering parents with healthy financial habits will enable them to instill those lessons in their children,” stated Diversity/Training Manager Myra Snipes, who oversees the MYLC. “Mayor Horrigan and the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council believe these financial education workshops will help participants obtain stable financial footing and manage their family’s future for years to come.”

In this first series of Huntington Bank’s Money Smart Modules, participants will explore various bank services options and how to manage credit as listed below.

For adults, Huntington offers education on the following topics:

  • Introduction to bank services

  • Introduction to credit

  • How to choose and keep a checking account

  • How to keep track of your money

  • The importance of saving

  • Your rights as a consumer

  • Building and keeping credit

  • Credit card knowledge

  • What to know about loans

  • Financial recovery

Online registration is available here for those interested in attending.
