Akron, Ohio, August 24, 2018 – Rosie, Akron’s tunnel boring machine (TBM), is close to completing her 6,240 foot voyage under downtown. To celebrate the completion of her work, and kick off the next phase of the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel project, the City will host a public party August 29, 2018 at noon in Lock 3 Park.
The event will feature a livestream viewing of the slow-but-steady breakthrough, merchandise sales, and information about the limited re-release of ‘Rosie Digs Akron’ Lager from Thirsty Dog Brewing Company (drafts of the lager will be available for purchase during the event). Attendees will have the opportunity to see and touch a sample concrete segment from the tunnel, snap their photo at an “inside the tunnel” selfie station, and take home free giveaways commemorating the day Rosie completed her important journey.
The breakthrough event has been scheduled based on current engineering projections. While all indicators suggest a successful August 29th breakthrough, if circumstances change, information will be shared with the public as soon as possible.
A media advisory will be issued Tuesday with additional information, including how the City will capture and share images and video of the breakthrough.
