Federal Court Monitor Rules in Favor of the City of Akron
Akron, Ohio (November 18, 2014) - Yesterday, the Federal Court Monitor in the Howe v. City of Akron case ruled in favor of the City of Akron and denied the Plaintiffs’ Motion for Contempt. The Plaintiffs in the Howe case alleged that the City violated the Court’s orders by negotiating with the Firefighters Union for a promotional process based upon education and seniority. The Court Monitor denied Plaintiffs' Motion acknowledging the complex and conflicting responsibilities of the City. The Court Monitor even noted that some of the Plaintiffs were in favor of the City's negotiated promotional process. This decision comes days after the Firefighter Union voted by an overwhelming 77% to accept the process. In finding that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the City, the Monitor went on to say that he will discuss with the parties the impact of the Agreement between the Union and the City.
