Mayor Plusquellic Authorizes Promotions for Fire District Chief Positions

Yesterday, the Federal Court ruled against the City of Akron’s Agreement with the Fire Union that would have promoted over 100 fire fighters.  The Court, in its mostly inaccurate decision regarding the facts, did however allow for a process to promote up to 10 District Chiefs.

Within hours of the decision, Mayor Plusquellic directed Akron’s Deputy Mayor for Labor Relations, Randy Briggs, to immediately negotiate the one outstanding issue (regarding seniority when there are simultaneous promotions) with the fire union.  Mayor Plusquellic stated he was prepared to promote the District Chiefs as soon as the next day, which was Thursday, March 12, once the issue is resolved.

After discussions between the Union President and the Deputy Mayor, it was decided that the earliest time they could convene to determine this issue could be Monday, March 16, 2015, due to scheduling conflicts.

“It is hoped that this issue can be quickly resolved on Monday and promotions can be made immediately,” said Mayor Plusquellic.

Attached is the letter from Mayor Plusquellic to Deputy Mayor for Labor Relations, Randy Briggs.
