City of Akron Press Release

Akron, Ohio, July 5, 2016
“Edward Irvine leaves behind a legacy of public service to the Akron community that was filled with firsts. During his nearly four decades with the Akron Police Department, Chief Irvine saw and led change throughout the force.
Following 34 years of service with the department, Ed was sworn in as Akron’s Chief of Police. This accomplishment meant a lot to him and he reminisced about this, along with many other life-changing moments in his book - First African American Chief of Police.
Ed’s commitment to living up to God’s purpose for him, “to make sure that all citizens of Akron received the service they deserved, were treated fair and with respect,” was obvious throughout his tenure as chief and as a member of the Akron Police Department. His passing is a loss to our community, his brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Zeta Tau Lambda Chapter, his church community at St. Bernard’s Church and many friends. I offer my prayers and support to his family.”
