Hydrant Flushing
Hydrant Flushing
The City of Akron Water Distribution Division flushes all public fire hydrants throughout the Akron Water service area to help maintain the water quality and to increase and evaluate the amount of water available for fire fighting purposes. Hydrant flushing is performed Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. extending approximately from April through October (weather permitting).
Customers can call our automated phone system for updates on streets that are to be flushed by dialing 330-375-2554, selecting Frequently Asked Questions and following the prompts. Water customers can also log on to the City of Akron’s News Releases page to get the latest hydrant flushing updates. Should the water user have any questions or need assistance, they are advised to call 330-375-2420.
As discoloration to water is likely to appear, we urge the water users to check their cold water for discoloration prior to drawing water for cooking and for use in automatic washers and dishwashers. If discoloration is found, the water user is advised to discontinue use until water clears.
Steps to take to check if water is clearing:
- Turn on cold water faucet only
- Let the water run for about 5 minutes. This brings the water from the water main in to the house and clears the line from the main to the faucet.
- If the water is still discolored, turn off the water and re-check in an hour.
