Lt. Gerald Forney

Lt. Gerald E. Forney was appointed to the Akron Police Department on December 28, 1992. He spent his first eight years serving in the Uniform Sub-Division. He was promoted to sergeant September of 2001. In June 2017 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

During his tenure on the police department, he has served as a patrolman and sergeant in the Uniform Sub-Division. He has served as a sergeant on the Street Narcotics Uniform Detail, in Community Relations, in the Narcotics Bureau, and as a detective sergeant in Crimes Against Persons.

Following his promotion, Lieutenant Forney served in the Office of Professional Standards and Accountability before taking his current position as the Training Bureau Commander.

Lieutenant Forney and his staff are is currently hosting 45 new police cadets in our training facility. He added the title of OPOTA Academy Commander to his resume to make this possible. Jerry spent countless hours preparing our staff, facilities and processes to ensure APD passed the OPOTA certification inspection. He has hosted a leadership academy for new and prospective leaders within the department and from several other local departments as well. The City of Akron benefits greatly from the good will created through positive encounters with him and the great training delivered every day by Jerry and his staff.

Lieutenant Forney has a contagious “Can Do” attitude. He always seems to find a way to get things done. He is a willing leader not afraid to take charge. He also has strong people skills that have served him well throughout his career.

Lieutenant Forney is married to Detective Dawn Forney also of the Akron Police Department. He is engaged in the Akron community. Jerry has volunteered as a coach in the Ellet Youth Football program, and has coached CYO basketball at St. Matthews.
