Art Programming

ART 1: DRAWING, PAINTING & MIXED MEDIA
Ages 6-9
Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:00 - 5:00 PM

At the end of each session, students will take home a portfolio full of art.

Our main dance program classes are held September-May ending with a June recital (for all classes except Intro classes). Participants can register for dance classes on RecDesk.

BALLET - FOR ALL AGES
Various days & times
Classical Ballet is a traditional style of dance which stresses an academic technique derived from French terms. It is a strict and demanding form of dance characterized by graceful, flowing movements. 

TAP- FOR ALL AGES 
Various days and times
Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of the metal tap striking the floor as a form of percussion. It is very rhythmic. This class introduces basic and advanced tap steps and works on putting them together. 

JAZZ- SCHOOL AGE
Various days and times 
Jazz is a form of dance that is matched to the rhythm and energy of upbeat music.  Using technique from ballet, jazz is energetic, incorporates intricate footwork and strong movements. 

HIP HOP - ALL AGES
Various days and times
Hip Hop is an energetic form of street dance with a variety of styles usually danced to hip hop music. It began with styles such as uprock, breaking, popping and locking and developed into social dancing as it became a more mainstream form of dance   

LYRICAL - SCHOOL AGE
Various days and times
Lyrical is a slow, expressive type of jazz that incorporates ballet technique. Movements are characterized by fluidity and grace, allowing the dancers to express a range of strong emotions through their dancing. 

SCOTTISH HIGHLAND/NATIONALS -SCHOOL AGE
Various days and times
Scottish dance is an aerobic form of dance that requires the control and grace of ballet. Scottish dances were used to tell a story, making them a ballad in dance form. Highland dance is more athletic than the graceful Scottish National dances as they were originally designed for men.  

POM - SCHOOL AGE
Pom combines cheer motion technique and dance technique. It is a synchronized form of dance with sharp motions and fun upbeat music.  It focuses on flexibility, kicks, jumps, and turns.

THEATRE DANCE - SCHOOL AGE
Theatre Dance 1 & 2 combines Jazz techniques with other genres to create a “Broadway” style of dance.  The movement can range anywhere from sharp to flowing and also incorporates using emotions and intense facial expressions.


Fitness 
With our Fitness Class Pass, you can attend multiple classes at multiple centers across the city.   Our certified instructors will help get you on track and keep you on task.  Try your first class for free.  Participants must register for a pass on RecDesk.

Zumba

MONDAYS at 5:30 PM
An aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various style of Latin American dance

POUND 
TUESDAYS at 6:00 PM
A full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates inspired movements while using lightly weighted drumsticks. 

ADULT TAP
WEDNESDAYS at 7:30 PM

We proudly partner with local organizations & groups to allow more activities to take place in our centers.  Even though we would like to think we are experts in all things recreation, sometimes it's better to bring in a specialist.

Summer Camps
Our summer camps are serious business....seriously FUN!  Whatever your summer needs are, we have options.  Whether it is our weekly theme camps or our 8-week summer long camp, check out all the possibilities.

Weekly Theme Camps  
We offer weekly theme camps at Northwest Family Recreation Center.  Our summer camps are 2-hour & 4-hour specialty camps for Tots, Youth & Teens.  Each week we will offer a different camp and a different theme!  Themes this summer include aquatics, art camps, dance camps, golf camp, nature adventure, photography, and theatre camp.  Visit AkronRecDesk to register for camps.

Tot Programs
Children learn and develop their own style and pace of skills.  Our programs are designed to facilitate the uniqueness of every child while preparing them for the next stage of growth.  We like to think of it as creating the framework of our future leaders.

MIX-IT-UP MONDAYS
Mondays 10:00 -11:30 AM  |  Spring and Winter sessions available
Cost $5 per class.

Each week tots and their caregivers will experience different activities including crafts, music, movement and mixing ingredients to make slime, playdough, bubbles, trail mix, and other recipes.


LITTLE LEARNERS
3-day, morning program designed for 3-5 year olds. 
Tuesday - Thursday 10:00 AM-12:00 PM  |  Spring and Winter sessions available
A structured program focusing on a letter-of-the-week as well as recognizing colors, shapes, numbers and other concepts while developing their intellectual, physical and social skills. 

FUN FRIDAYS
2-4 year-olds with a caregiver
