The Comprehensive Planning Division performs a variety of
functions related to preserving and improving the quality of life for Akron residents.
Areas of responsibility include
- Formulation of long-range strategies for land use in the
city.
- Development of the Consolidated Plan and related reports.
- Preparation of renewal plans for neighborhoods.
- Development of the Continuum of Care for the homeless.
- Liaison with neighborhood groups and non-profit development
corporations.
- Implementing the Community Services, Energency Shelter and
Neighborhood Partnership Programs
- Coordinating implementation of the Neighborhood Business
District Program.
- Coordinating implementation of the Land Reutilization
Program.
- Development and monitoring of Akrons housing strategy
and housing improvement programs.
- Conducting ongoing research on housing trends.
- Preparing historic preservation and environmental reviews
for projects.
- Preparing Geographic Information System (GIS) area and
informational maps.
Comprehensive Planning assembles the City's Consolidated
Strategy and Plan, which budgets Federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, Home Investment
Partnership (HOME) program and Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) program, to address local
housing, quality of living environment and economic needs. A summary of Akrons

Akrons Neighborhood
Partnership Program is a joint program of the City of Akron and the Akron
Community Foundation. It supports new and creative neighborhood efforts through matching
grants to neighborhood organizations for small, innovative neighborhood-based projects.
Non-profit Development Corporation Assistance:
Non-profit Development Corporations are providing important development programs within
their neighborhoods. The emergence of these organizations has led to the City to support
their organizational structure not only with project funding, but administration funding.
Organization must be at least in operation for a year and have the capacity to provide
housing related services within a defined neighborhood. For more information, please
